WE ARE COMMITTED TO SUSTAINABILITY AND RESPECT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
SUSTAINABILITY COMMITMENT
Our commitment to sustainability and the environment is something we have been working on for a long time and continue to do so constantly. In recent years, we have implemented aerothermal energy and solar panels, but other aspects such as organic farming have been part of our lives for a long time.
We understand tourism as a way to boost the economy of towns, but we also know that it must be responsible and environmentally friendly. That’s why we try to lead by example and do our part to ensure that our activities have a positive impact on our surroundings and can continue offering you the best of a charming rural hotel in Asturias located in an idyllic natural setting.
Below, we’ll tell you about the sustainable practices we carry out at Hotel Valleoscuru.
COMMITTED TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH SEVEN SPECIFIC ACTIONS

AEROTHERMAL HOT WATER
We have an aerothermal hot water system in each of the hotel’s two buildings.
This produces 900 liters of hot water at a constant temperature in a sustainable manner with little environmental impact, as it is considered a renewable energy source that uses outside air to produce energy.
USE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY WITH SOLAR PANELS
Since aerothermal energy requires a small amount of electricity, we have 17 solar panels with an output of 8 kW/h, which support the aerothermal energy and also power the hotel’s common areas, achieving 0 kW consumption on sunny days for many hours of the day.
In the hotel dining room, we have accumulators, which are charged during the day by the solar panels and gradually release heat at night, creating a very pleasant temperature.
FIREPLACE AND PELLET STOVE
In the main living room, we have a wood-burning fireplace for heating, using the pruning waste from the two organic apple orchards.
And, in the other living room, we have a pellet stove, a renewable energy heating system that uses compressed wood for combustion.
BEEKEEPING
We have hives to facilitate the pollination of our organic apple orchards and to obtain local, organic honey for our breakfasts.
We also have a “bee hotel,” which houses tired or distracted bees so they can return to their home or continue their work.

ORGANIC GARDEN
Our seasonal garden, where we plant lettuce, tomatoes, and other vegetables, is used in our dishes, both for dinner and breakfast.
For the garden, we use compost, which is a naturally fertile soil obtained from our compost bin (organic waste that is transformed into soil, such as grass, vegetable scraps, fruit, etc.). We also have our own planting plants, obtained from tomato, lettuce, and zucchini seeds from previous years.
We also usually have strawberries during the season, which we use mainly for desserts. We also sell organic broad beans through our online store.
From our fruit trees, such as peach, pear, plum, cherry, and apple trees, we obtain the raw materials with which we make our famous homemade jams.
LOCAL AND 0-KM-0 PRODUCTS
Our goal is to ensure that all our products are locally sourced and from local producers. We purchase organic Asturian beef, called Bioastur. We use fresh milk, artisan yogurt, fresh cheese from a nearby dairy, and our cheeses are from the oldest cheese factory in Llanes: “Collera.”
We also purchase locally sourced organic fruit, such as blueberries, for fresh consumption and jam making.
ORGANIC CIDER AND VINEGAR
Our cider production is completely organic. You can read the full story of our conversion to organic farming in 2010 in “Our Story.” We have all the COPAE certifications that label us as an Asturian organic cider, thanks to our two apple orchards, where we follow all the processes to obtain a natural cider without the use of fertilizers or chemicals.
In addition to cider, we also produce organic apple vinegar.
If you are interested in organic farming and production, we will be happy to explain how it works at the hotel, what organic production entails, and show you both the farm and the cider mill where we make the cider and vinegar.
RECYCLING BINS MADE WITH WOOD FROM OUR APPLE TREES
At Valleoscuru, we take recycling seriously, and recycling in the villages isn’t always easy. That’s why we’ve set up some unique recycling bins inside the hotel, made with wood from our apple trees and integrated into the landscape.
So, when you’re at our hotel, you can use them to recycle glass, paper, or plastic, and then we’ll take care of taking it to the appropriate container.
